THE GREEN COALITION OF DEVELOPMENT BANKS IN THE AMAZON
The Green Coalition is an alliance of 20 development banks in the Amazon region working to mobilize resources that foster sustainable, resilient, and inclusive development of one of the world’s most vital and increasingly threatened biomes, the Amazonia.
Launched at the Amazon Summit in Belém do Pará in August 2023, the Green Coalition strengthens collaboration and the collective impact of its members to scale investments that promote sustainable activities across sectors and accelerate the region’s transition to more inclusive, low-carbon, and nature-positive economies.
By aligning financial action with environmental stewardship, the Coalition aims to secure the well-being of the Amazonia’s people and ecosystems while contributing to global and national climate and biodiversity goals.
The Green Coalition channels finance where it matters most, from energy, sustainable infrastructure, and logistics, to communities and enterprises building a thriving Amazonia region.

THE GREEN COALITION OF DEVELOPMENT BANKS IN THE AMAZON
FOSTERING SUSTAINABLE GROWTH IN THE AMAZONIA
The Green Coalition brings together 17 public development banks from 6 countries in the Amazonia – Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Suriname, along with 3 multilateral development banks as international partners, to align and channel sustainable finance tailored to the unique realities of the Amazonia.
Our members aim to enable conditions in the region to support initiatives that generate social, environmental, and economic value, promoting inclusive growth while preserving and restoring the Amazonia’s natural resources.
By enabling conditions to support sustainable economic activities with the protection of ecosystems and communities, the Coalition helps build a more resilient and equitable Amazonia for generations to come.
HOW WE WORK
The Green Coalition operates through four interconnected lines of action designed to channel capital where it matters most, to communities, ecosystems, and enterprises building a sustainable Amazonia.
MAPPING OPPORTUNITIES AND IDENTIFYING NEEDS IN THE AMAZONIA
To channel resources effectively, we first understand the landscape: Where are sustainable finance flows currently directed? What sectors and communities need increased access to this capital? What successful models can be scaled across the region? What we're doing: Analyzing Coalition members' portfolios, mapping sustainable finance flows (USD 7.6 billion identified in 2023), identifying financing bottlenecks, conducting studies on investment opportunities, and building partnerships to amplify what's already succeeding across the region.
DEVELOPING A COMMON INVESTMENT LANGUAGE FOR THE AMAZONIA
Coordinating action across six countries and 17 public development banks with diverse mandates requires shared definitions and standards. The Green Coalition sets out to resolve this by creating a shared understanding of sustainable finance and consistent criteria for tracking environmental and social impact in the Amazonia, with the aim of communicating credible results to investors. What we're doing: Mapping the sustainable finance frameworks utilized by Coalition banks, defining impact measurement approaches, facilitating workshops to align standards while respecting regional diversity, and building shared investment guidelines that clarify criteria for sustainable finance from Coalition banks to the Amazonia.
DESIGNING FINANCIAL PRODUCTS TAILORED TO THE AMAZONIA
Development banks across the Amazonia have pioneered financial products adapted to regional realities, from credit lines for bioeconomy enterprises to capital markets solutions that enable access to competitive funding. The Green Coalition showcases these innovations and identifies opportunities for adaptation and scale. What we're doing: Documenting successful financial instruments from Coalition banks through case studies, establishing the Green Coalition Lab to test and refine products, facilitating peer learning among Coalition banks, and developing technical assistance tools.
MOBILIZING RESOURCES FOR THE AMAZONIA AT SCALE
Green Coalition public development banks invest approximately USD 7.6 billion annually in sustainable activities in the Amazonia. Reaching the region's financing needs by 2030 requires connecting Coalition banks, which have deep local presence, community relationships, and on the-ground capacity, with international capital sources. What we're doing: The Green Coalition serves as a resource mobilization platform, working to unlock USD 10-20 billion by 2030 through diverse Amazonia-focused financial instruments and mechanisms, as well as partnerships with international investors seeking credible, impactful investment opportunities in the Amazonia.
